Join Tyfu Cymru’s Ornamentals IPDM network for a Study Visit to David Austin Roses. Operating from a 30 hectare (9 Ha is dedicated to container production) site they produce over 2 million Roses (made up of field grown and containerised crops) per year (650,000 of which are containerised). A reduction in the availability of conventional fungicides has resulted in increased use of Bioprotectants which currently make up around 25% of spray applications for disease control in container grown crops. Biological controls also form a major part of the integrated approach to crop protection across the nursery with all Two-spotted spider mite (TSSM) now controlled with Phytoseiulus persimilis in outdoor crops. They have been using biological controls outdoors for around 5 years which has resulted in improved pest control.
Led by ADAS Consultant David Talbot, joined by David Austin Roses staff the meeting will enable attendees to see and discuss the principles and practices of IPDM (Integrated Pest & Disease Management) in a commercial setting. We will hear how David Austin Roses use different species of biologicals in conjunction with cultural control methods to manage and control pest populations, including how they plan their approach from the start of production programmes. We will learn how cultural methods, bioprotectants, biological controls and IPM compatible fungicides prevent and control pests and diseases as part of a robust IPDM programme.
The day will also give those attending an opportunity to share experiences of controlling pest and diseases in a sustainable way in what will very much be a peer-to-peer learning setting.
