Tyfu Cymru are hosting a webinar on sunflowers as there is currently a lot of interest in the crop both from farm tourism pick your own and the cut flower growers. This crop is relatively simple to grow and being a combinable crop has more options for weed control than some other horticultural crops. It is seen as a cheap win for farm tourism and produces a spectacular show that can be linked to farm visits, and flowers can be sold, or the events charge entrance fees.

The crop can be drilled or planted and there are two types, the bird seed cover types where seed costs are low, or for the more advanced special cut flower varieties that produce predictable results. Often a combination of the two fit well with farm tourism.

They are programmable for a long season usually June to late September and can be used as a maze subject or mixed with maize.

The webinar is presented by Sarah Cook, ADAS arable crop specialist and Chris Creed adviser in Wales on PYO and farm attractions.
